About Carroll Gap Farmhouse
Carroll Gap is a locality in rural North West NSW. The original brick building at its centre was built in 1880 as Carroll Gap Public School and teacher residence, and has also operated as a Post Office, Telephone Exchange, and museum at various times over the years .
Carroll Gap Farmhouse today doubles as a simple family home and cookery centre. We offer it as a venue for booked casual café style dining, catered group functions, as well as cookery classes on occasions. We specialise in traditional Australian country style cookery, proudly using fresh home grown and local produce as much as possible. We cook from scratch using raw ingredients and respect the recipes and cookery techniques used by past generations, while incorporating modern day technology and food science where beneficial.
On our small farm we aim to incorporate principles of sustainable agriculture, producing organically grown vegetables, fruit, herbs, and eggs for use in our kitchen. When seasons permit, we run dairy cows for milk to use in cheesemaking, and use locally grown wheat for sourdough bread.
The Farmhouse features wood fired cookery with a range of stoves, ovens, fireplaces and barbeques of varying vintages in use at different times of the year. The outdoor brick oven is used for baking bread, pizzas, and roasting meats. In the kitchen several historic cast iron stoves go all winter for slow cooking and preserving, providing a cosy warm environment.
